Description of the Boats | The Captains

The boats we use are called Pangas. Pangas are the basic boat used to fish Loreto and all over the Baja Peninsula. Loreto is a town whose sport fishing industry is still dominated by the panga. Generally a standard panga is 20-22 feet in length while a super Panga is 22-25 feet. Both types are well equipped for sport fishing. The Standard Panga is best suited for one or two anglers while the Super Panga will handle three anglers comfortably. A recent addition is the Deluxe Super Panga which is a larger boat that four anglers can share.

Off Loreto the water is often very calm and Pangas can cruise the same distance and speed that larger boats can. Their narrow and long shape makes them ideal to land on even the shallowest beaches which enables anglers to take full advantage of the great inshore fishing available here. The design of the panga includes a forward platform that varies in size and makes an ideal platform for flycasting. Most of their decks are equipped with bench seating but some have center consoles. Seat backs need to be requested. All the boats have bimini shade tops in the summer time but they will need to be requested in winter. The Port Captain of Loreto requires VHF radios on every boat, flotation and safety equipment and all of our boats comply.

The image above proves that even the largest fish can be landed from a Panga. As an angler, you are literally just above the surface of the water in a Panga so the entire fishing experience will truly be up close and personal.

Our Captains

Describing any fishing boat would be like telling less than half the story because its the captain who makes or breaks any trip no matter how fancy the boat. The Baja Big Fish Company started out with several boats and planned on growing a fleet, but later we found that this wasn't the direction that suited us best. That's when we started to hire local independent captains. It turned out that these guys took better care of their equipment and took better care of our customers. Now looking back, (and ahead) in working this way we've done a great service to these guys and to Loreto as we've been concerting the efforts of local talent as business partners, not just turning them into employees. Our captains are the owners of their own boats they take pride in the work and in their equipment. Many of these captains are former commercial fishermen so even before working with tourism they already knew the fishery.

Each captain has his his own personality and style and like most fishermen their boat is also unique. Every one of these guys knows how to fish this area well. Some are from families that have lived here for generations and some are from other parts of Mexico arriving here many years ago when Los Cabos was being established. All have keen eyesight for spotting fish offshore and all can accompany conventional anglers very successfully. Our captains have each developed a regular clientele and book up well in advance of the high season (June through August).

Captain Francisco Muñoz Tenorio:

Captain Francisco is originally from the state of Guerrero and came to Loreto via Cabo San Lucas as a construction worker. He's been in Loreto for over twenty years and has been fishing with our clients for seven years. He caught on to being a Captain very quickly and describes the job as "like being a bartender". Because of his English language skills, and having to listen to my rant, Francisco completely understands the methods of the fly fisher. He's got a great personality and is fun to be around. His skills as a hunter of fish have become impressive. He rarely listens to the radio, rarely follows other boats preferring to break away from the crowd.

Captaion Francisco drives the "Enzl Damiana" a standard size panga with rear and forward casting platforms powered by a 4 stroke Honda 90 Hp outboard motor. Here he is holding a 54 pound Yellowtail he caught off Isla Coronado in March of 2004.

Captain Eulogio Davis Sanchez:

Captain Eulogio Davis Sanchez is a native Loretano from a local family with a long history here. Eulogio has become one of the most requested captains because of his love for fishing, patience and willingness to try new techniques. He started taking out fly fishing clients nine years ago at the ripe old age of 17. His knowledge of the English language and open mind has allowed him to understand fully, the methods of fly fishing this area. Eulogio has many loyal regular clients and continues to win over those who are new to Loreto fishing and fortunate enough to be scheduled with him. Although Eulogio occasionally breaks into the VHF conversations, he chooses to lose the crowd and go off in his own direction.

Eulogio drives the Super Panga "La Inconforme y que..." which is powered by a four stroke Yamaha 115 Hp outboard. Here he's holding an estimated 50+ pound Dorado that was caught by a client on flygear in August 2006.

Captain Gabriel Sanchez Banuelos:

Captain Gabriel fishes a lot. If he's not out with clients then he's in his boat alone of with friends fishing for the hell of it. Needless to say, he really enjoys fishing and is very in tune with the elements, the area's structure and the fishery. If for some reason we haven't fished in a few days and we feel out of the loop, Captain Gabriel is often who we call to get the latest information on the fishing. Gabriel speaks very good English and is very attentive to his clients. He can guide fly fishing clients very competently and his patience for beginners or hard to handle clients is unparalleled.

Captain Gabriel drives the Super Panga "Analeanna II" that is powered by a four stroke Honda 90 Hp outboard. He's at left holding up a very heavy Roosterfish while the client who caught it poses. The fish was taken in July 2004 from off Punta Baja and released after this photograph.

Captain Antonio Romero Murillo:

Captain Antonio or simply "Toño" is one of the more animated characters I've had the pleasure of fishing with. He literally gets more excited about an angler hooking up than the angler themselves. His English skills are good and he's at about 50% fluency. He can accompany fly fishing anglers but does better with conventional anglers. This captain has been with our operation since the beginning and together we have learned a lot about the fishery, our technique and our industry. Toño is a municipal policeman in the evenings and gets special permission to work full time during the summer high season. He is very friendly and attentive with clients and patient with beginners, especially children.

Captain Antonio drives the Standard Panga "Vaquera" that's powered by a four stroke Honda 90 Hp outboard. Here, he is holding up a nice Jack Crevalle that was caught on flygear and later released.

Captain Juvencio "Fidel" Alcaide Garcia:

Captain Fidel originates from the State of Morelos but has been in Loreto for over 30 years. In that time he started commercial fishing then got into the tourism industry as a fishing Captain to suppliment his income. Fidel has been working for us for over seven years and his clients are always satisfied. His English skills are at below 50% fluency but this doesn't seem to bother most clients as he can obviously communicate well enough while fishing. He has the ability to guide fly fishing clients successfully and has many loyal repeat clients.

When we instituted our no take billfish policy Fidel was instrumental in helping us convince the captains that it was a good idea. There is a lot of misconception as to when a billfish will be able to survive or not after being hooked. Fidel explained to our captains that he has witnessed several times the "tripa" recessing back into the fish during its revival alongside the boat. Often a billfish will "throw their stomachs" and it is a survival mechanism which is similar to the human's vomiting rection when we swallow something foul to our system. It has been widely thought and for many years that when a billfish does this he will not survive and must be kept. Captain Fidel eloquently described the technique of reviving a billfish alongside the boat prior to release and he described that by waiting enough time the exposed innard of billfish that display this reaction will recess back into it.

Captain Fidel drives the Super Panga "3 Ases" or the Deluxe Super Panga "2 Ases" owered by four stroke Mercury 115 and 150Hp respectively. Ases being Spanish for Aces like in poker, not what you thought. Here he is posing with a Black Marlin that was caught on flygear and released after photographing.

Captain Victor Manuel Villalejo Higuera:

We will add Captain Victor's bio soon!

Captain Victor drives the Standard Panga "Bibiana I" that's powered by a four stroke Honda 90 Hp outboard.

Captain Francisco Mayoral Davis:

We will add Captain Francisco's bio soon!

Captain Francisco drives the "El Parajo" a Super Panga that's powered by a four stroke Yamaha 115 Hp outboard.

Captain Antonio Monzon:

We will add Captain Antonio's bio soon!
