The roosterfish is probably the most exotic looking species we catch here. It is an ideal light tackle fish. Roosterfish swim and feed over sandy to lightly cobbled underwater terrain. The large ones can be fished over wrecks and large bouldered bottom structure. They'll hit a chrome spoon very well and flies should be patterned after them. Also any sardina, ladyfish, or mullet imitation will work well. It is difficult to set the hook into a roosterfish's mouth, it must be very sharp.
Roosterfish feed in schools when they are small and then in pairs as they get larger. The largest ones feed alone, they inhabit the boulder terrain and they'll use the same tactic as the Yellowtail to escape.
Roosterfish can be spotted most easily when feeding. They will erect their characteristic dorsal fin when being agressive and feeding and can be identified as their combs boil or slice through the surface. The loners are in deep water and usually blind strike. They make many long and strong runs and the bigger they are, the more intense the fight.
