Mediterraneo Restaurant and Texas BBQ
Mediterraneo Restaurant has the finest view on the Malecon in downtown Loreto. Italian, Spanish, French, Greek food, local seafood, pasta and pizzas, fine wine and a full moon rising over the water. In the backyard there's a genuine Texas B.B.Q. Enjoy ribs and cold beer in a garden setting while watching your favorite sporting event thats being projected on the side of the two storey restaurant complex. Yeah, this is really Loreto! Owners Carol and Lee have been kind to fellow Loretanos with donations of dozens of blankets to children of San Javier and polarized sunglasses for the municipal police. Good people.

Domingo's Place was called El Nido for many years but has changed its name. Website says El Nido, menus say El Nido, taxis know it as El Nido but its Domingo's Place dammit! Great atmosphere in the back outdoor dining area.

La Terraza located in the heart of town on a second floor outdoor patio or "terraza", La Terraza is small and intimate with good food and good prices.

Augie's Bar and Bait Shop OK, Augie's doesn't have a website but they should. And they should have a live streaming webcam at happy hour too. Since I'm a friend of Anjelica's I recommend this place. Its right on the malecon. Good eats. Good drinks. Live bait.

Other Interesting Links:
Loreto is victim of its own fantastic natural beauty, they say its been "discovered" recently. Actually there have been people here for well over three centuries but this boomtown is expecting tens of thousands of new settlers. Loreto has a limited supply of fresh water and is at the heart of a national marine sanctuary. These organizations are working towards the environmental and social preservation of this beautiful place.

Loreto Eco Alliance Known in Loreto as "Eco Alianza Loreto, A.C." the newest non profit that is focusing on coordinating the citizenry of Loreto to take part in the decisions that will affect the rest of their lives. The current plan for the Loreto area is for uncontrolled tourism development and densly packed resort retirement communities along the coast. While these plans may benefit Loretanos with jobs and short term economic growth, the proposed scale of these combined developments will no doubt have a very negative overall affect. Loreto's social environment will further diminish as land values and prices of goods and services rise out of reach of average person. Our environment will be severely impacted as our precious fresh water becomes depleated (see Harvard study below), and as more persons increase the demand on a public infrastructure that cannot handle the load. It is the vision of Eco Alianza Loreto to educate the people so that they will have the information and strength to hold their state and local government and the developers responsible for their actions. We applaud this valiant effort!

Sustainable or Greenwashing Baja Life issue twenty stands out because after over ten years of glossy photos of resorts and developments, Eric Cutter who is also a founder of Loreto Eco Alliance, published a story on one of the most controversial development projects in Mexico. It opens with the following words: "Loreto Bay Co. Sustainable or Greenwashing? A voracious appetite for profit threatens Loreto's fragile biosphere. Can a Developer who purveys sustainability deliver on the promise?" Keep in mind, this story was published in 2006 and in re-reading it and knowing what I know now as a local, it is both interesting and frustrating. If Loreto Bay wasn't pleased by this story then they ought to be very glad that I never wrote it. If authors Parkin and Vargas ever revisit this subject I will be happy to pick apart the responses by the developer, both from a standpoint of a local citizen and businessperson and as a trained biologist and chemist. Eco Alianza Loreto is bringing together bright minds and experience with scientists and local experts among their board of directors and members. All proceeds of the sale of this and other issues of Baja Life at our shop, goes to Eco Alianza Loreto.
