Bait and Marina Report – February 4, 2013

Mackerel and Bigeye:
Mackerel have only been for sale rarely since the New Year. This is because winds have prevented them from fishing for bait on most nights and of low sales. So we’ve been catching Mackerel from off Coronado Island. There is a lot of current out there so its tough to stay over the spot but there is bait there.
Sardinas:
There are sardinas inside the marina but there haven’t been people buying them. This is mainly due to the winds. When we can get out and fish we’ve been taking advange of the calmer seas early in the morning, leaving too early to net the sardinas.
CURRENT MARINA BAIT PRICES (in Mexican Pesos):
* Mackerel: $250.00 Pesos for fifteen bait fish
* Sardinas: $200.00 Pesos for a tank-full
WHAT’S BITING OFF THE MARINA BREAKWALLS:
Barracuda, small pargo, bigeye, the occasional sierra and the all too common puffers and trumpetfish.

Pam,
Thanks for getting back on the reports! It looks great and very imformative! What is the deal on the cruiseships? Do you know their schedule in April? Inquiring minds want to know.
Hi there, They’ve been coming here since 2001. The last very strong la niña like we just had was in 1998 and I remember we had sardinas the following year in the spring but we didn’t get the cruise ships then. This has been a complaint from the sardineros for years, now we’re really feeling it. The schedule is April 5, the Crystal Symphony, April 13 and 26 Holland America Zandaam.
Thanks Pam,
How about May? Is there a site where I can find this info?
May for cruise ships? The ones I listed in April will be the last ones until winter 2011 (december). There is a new Mexican cruise lines called “Ocean Star” that is supposed to start service in April (this year-LOL). Loreto isn’t on their itinerary and hopefully it won’t be. Imagine opening day for the fishin’ for the mission tournament with a cruise ship closing down the marina!
thanks for the report. great to know what’s going on when i am not there!
keep up the good work.
hi pam,
new format is great ! i’ve missed talking to you since we moved from cabo san lucas. also i’ve lost your email address, sure like to get that back. my email address has changed as you probably noticed. i really look forward to this summer and maybe getting on to another sailfish on the fly. hope the sardine population vastly improves. take care and tight lines.
Hi there. I’ll e-mail you back this afternoon and I really hope we can get you into sailfish this summer!
