Bait and Marina Report – April 19, 2011

April 12, 2011; winds from the North and sargasso on malecon

There are large mackerel and small mackerel. They look exactly alike except for the size. The large mackerel measures around 10 inches (24-30 cm) and the small one around 6 inches (15-18cm). They’re for sale or can be caught off Coronado or straight out from the marina.

Sardinas have been seen 3-4 miles off the marina. Look for the brown pelicans diving on them. They’re in water too deep to net. Unfortunately the lack of sardinas at the marina poses quite a challenge to the fly fishing. There is a chance sardinas can be netted off Coronado and Carmen off the shorelines.

Fly fishers should prepare to fish purist, without buying chum, or be ready to use larger bait for teasers.

CURRENT BAIT PRICES (in Mexican Pesos):

* Mackerel/Bigeye: $250.00 Pesos (for fifteen bait fish)
* Jurelitos: $250.00 Pesos (for about two dozen individuals)
* Sardinas: $200.00 Pesos (currently not available)
